See what it looks like to run in the dark during the Winter months in Michigan.

Think Spring!

Runners are already planning for Spring races and training schedules have begun.

You don't need a gym membership to run this time of year, all you need is several layers of clothes, spikes or coils for your shoes, another layer of clothes, a headlamp, reflective clothing,  more clothes, a hat and gloves, ski goggles (optional) and one more layer of clothing to keep warm.

Layering is important and dressing like it is 10-15 degrees warmer will keep you more comfortable once you begin running and your body temperature heats up. Sweat and moisture can begin to be a problem if you are outside for a long period of time; another reason wicking fabrics and several layers are essential.

Spikes or coils for your shoes are inexpensive and indispensable if conditions are icy. Deeper snow slows a runner down, but actually provides more traction- it is the icy spots that are dangerous. Coaches and trainers suggest slowing down a little and shortening your stride to take smaller steps on ice and snow.

When you wait until after work to run during the Winter months in Michigan, it is dark. Reflective clothing helps others see you but you will need a flashlight or a headlamp to see where you are going.

Don't let this list or gear and guidance stop you from getting out and playing in the snow!
