Loy Norrix Principal Sued For Sexual Harassment
The lawsuit was filed in December 2016 by a former employee of the Loy Norrix High School, and claims that Principal Rodney Prewitt made unwanted sexual advances towards her and other employees. The lawsuit says that when the employee rebuffed Prewitt’s advances, she was denied a new position in the district that she had been vying for.
Helen DeVos Passes Away At The Age Of 90
The family of Helen DeVos says early Thursday that she died at the age of 90. DeVos was born in 1927 as Helen Van Wesep, and grew up in the Grand Rapids area, graduating from Calvin College with a Bachelor of Arts.
Kalamazoo Woman Wanted For Attempting To Scam Seniors
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says that since August, they have received complaints from several senior living facilities that a woman has been calling their residents, claiming to be a representative from the bank’s fraud department.
Animals Seized In Calhoun County Cockfighting Investigation
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 3000 block of 3 ½ mile Rd. in Athens around noon Friday, and while they were there they were advised of possible animal cruelty taking place in the area. Deputies responded later with a search warrant.
City Disputes Battle Creek’s Ranking Among ‘Worst Cities To Raise Children’
The City of Battle Creek has taken exception to a recent ranking by the website 24/7 Wall St. that listed Battle Creek as one of the 25 worst cities to raise children in; in response, they have pulled out data refuting some claims. The City says that they believe the website’s methodology was “lacking”, particularly in their use of the FBI Uniform Crime Report, particularly when the FBI itself says the crime statistics shouldn’t be used to rank cities.
Portion Of I-94 To Be Named After Fallen Fire Chief In New Bill
On Thursday, Senator Margaret O’Brien of Portage introduced the bill, which would name 6 miles of I-94 between Sprinkle Rd. and Galesburg in honor of Switalski. In a release to her website, Sen. O’Brien says that renaming the highway will not only honor Chief Switalski’s contributions to the community, but it will also serve as a reminder to motorists to drive safe.
Kalamazoo County Names James VanDyken As Undersheriff
On Wednesday, the Office announced in a release that James VanDyken will be taking the role, a promotion from his current role as Captain of their operations division. The 47-year-old VanDyken has worked with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office since 1991, starting out a jail deputy and getting promoted steadily since then.
Pro-DACA Protesters Arrested For Blocking Downtown Kalamazoo Street
The incident began as a rally in Kalamazoo’s Bronson Park Tuesday afternoon, in protest of President Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA. At some point, a group walked down to the intersection of Westnedge and Michigan Ave. and began blocking traffic.
