Thanks to the Frozen Detroit River It Is Now Possible to Walk from Michigan to Canada

Walking from Michigan to Canada isn't usually possible. Bodies of water from Lake Superior to Lake Erie separate the US and Canada in Michigan. But thanks to a frozen Detroit River, you conceivably could walk across the border.

While Michigan has several bridges connecting to Canada in Detroit, Port Huron and Sault Ste Marie, none are specifically designed for pedestrian traffic. The one bridge between the two countries where you can walk to Canada is the Peace Bridge in Niagara Falls.

With the Detroit River currently frozen, it would be possible to walk to Canada - not that you could cross a potentially dangerous river - we don't want you falling in and drowning - so don't really try it.

Of course you'd still need to walk to a border crossing checkpoint and clear customs, present your passport and make your declarations the same as you would if you were traveling via car.

One other consideration - the US Coast Guard ice cutters routinely run the Detroit River to break up the ice and keep shipping lanes open - so maybe this walking to Canada idea isn't so great after all.
