The city of Portage has been awarded a Transportation Economic Development Grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation. The grant, totaling $259,605, will support a $224-million expansion of Stryker Instruments, resulting in 105 new jobs. The total cost of the project is $432,675 with the city of Portage providing $173,070 in matching funds, or 40 percent of the total cost.

Stryker Instruments, a division of the Stryker Corporation, is expanding into new research and development opportunities and is consolidating several existing Portage facilities into one new campus which includes a state-of-the-art research and development center and bio-skills laboratories for new products.

Portage will use the money to install traffic signals at the new intersection of Portage Road and Stryker Way and a new dedicated turn lane into the campus.
