Country / folk singer-songwriter Sarah Jane Scouten has new music to share, and she's giving The Boot's readers an exclusive first listen to one of the tracks. Press play below to hear "Bang Bang."

"Bang Bang" is a rollicking, uptempo track with a retro feel and just the right amount of twang and blues influence; in Scouten's own words, it's "bombastic, irreverent and kind of smutty behind a thin veneer." The song's lyrics feature "references to historical figures that only the Brits catch" and were inspired by the "lyrical freedom" of early blues.

"They could say things that were shocking even by modern standards, but always in a very clever and playful way," Scouten tells The Boot of that genre. "I don't tend to write sexy songs, but I took my cue from some old blues and wrote a song all about birds and bees, which can be as literal or euphemistic as you like."

A native of Bowen Island, British Columbia, Canada, Scouten wrote "Bang Bang" while she was in Aberdeen, Scotland, during the summer solstice. During that time of year, it doesn't get dark in Aberdeen, so when Scouten couldn't sleep one night, she found herself starting to write "Bang Bang."

"It was the middle of the night, and I didn’t want to wake the house," the artist recalls, "so I just hummed it quietly and wrote all the verses, before playing it on guitar in the morning."

A two-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee and previous Western Canadian Music Award nominee, Scouten will release her third studio album, When the Bloom Falls From the Rose on June 16. Visit her official website for more information.
