Elvis Presley would have been 80 years old today.

Everyone thinks of Elvis as the King of Rock & Roll, but don't forget he was a country boy from Tupelo, Mississippi who loved his Mama.

From 1955 to his death in 1977, Elvis charted 44 singles on Billboard's Country charts.

Here are some songs that are now considered "oldies" that were #1 hits on the U.S. Country charts.

  • #1 on the Top 100 chart for 7 weeks, "Heartbreak Hotel" held down the top spot on the Country chart for an incredible 17 weeks and went to #3 R&B.
  • "Don't Be Cruel" was Elvis' biggest-selling single recorded in 1956.
  • Along with the flip side, "Hound Dog",  it sold 10 million copies.  Both songs went to #1
  • Although it stalled at #3 on the Coutry & Western charts, "All Shook Up" was Elvis Presley's 2nd #1 R& B single and spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 beginning in April of 1957.
  • When Elvis hit the big screen the title song from Jailhouse Rock was not only a #1 Country and Top 100 hit, it also led the Best Sellers in Stores, Most Played by Jockeys, Most Played Country & Western Singles, Most Played Rhythm & Blues Singles, Top Selling Country & Western and Rhythm & Blues and Cash Box Magazine Top Country & Western Singles.

A member of the inaugural class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Elvis Presley was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998.

It all started in the South: Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935.
