Ocean-like 20' waves and winds in excess of 50 mph are possible as the National Weather Service has issued a gale warning for Lake Michigan from Michigan City, Indiana to St. Joseph, Michigan

Small boats and inexperienced crews are being warned off Lake Michigan as a "Fall-like front" may create dangerous conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a gale warning predicting winds of 34-47 knots (39-54 mph) and waves 12-16 feet and higher and they caution,

Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

This warning is in effect until 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, Aug 5 and many others have been issued for the Great Lakes.
