Following the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide on July 26, Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell has issued a statement.

I am pleased that the United States Supreme Court has decided in favor of extending marriage equality to all, allowing same sex couples all of the rights, benefits, and responsibilities marriage offers. This historic decision is an important step forward for our country and our community.

This decision will strengthen our City, as our friends and neighbors in the LGBT community will no longer be unjustly deprived of the important social and legal benefits marriage offers. The Kalamazoo County Clerk is prepared to accommodate those who would like to marry right away, and it would be my privilege to immediately begin performing wedding ceremonies for the residents of our community who have been denied this right for so long.
