A fire on the rooftop of a popular restaurant in downtown Kalamazoo has the business closed for at least a day. Food Dance made the announcement that they would be closed for Friday around noon September 28.

Those inside dining were safely evacuated. Smoke could be seen billowing from the the top of the building as multiple fire departments responded. The fire was quickly brought under control and there are no reports of injuries.

The building that Food Dance is housed in did not suffer any structural damage but water did affect some areas. There are reports that the fire originated in the kitchen, but the restaurant says that their kitchen was unaffected.

Traffic in the area was diverted with East Michigan Avenue and Pitcher Street being closed, at least temporarily. Authorities have asked those heading that area to seek alternate routes.

At this time there is no word on when the Food Dance will open.
