Two Bronson Battle Creek nurses received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses during the first three months of the year. Anna Ott is a registered nurse in the general medical unit and Sandra Kelly is a registered nurse in palliative care.

Nurses are nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, family members and colleagues.

Ott was nominated for the DAISY Award by one of her patients who said that Ott is “cheerful, always has a smile, and has a loving attitude.” Her patient went on to explain how Ott came to check on her, even after she had transitioned to care for other patients. “She would come to check on me just to make sure everything was fine. She worried about me just like my own daughter did.” Compassion for patients is one of the attributes that makes a great nurse and Ott certainly exemplifies this quality.

Kelly was nominated for the DAISY Award by one of her coworkers who has worked alongside Kelly for more than ten years. Her nominator explained how Kelly is the type of nurse who “inspires others by her example. She is a great resource to her peers and caregiver to her patients and their families.” Kelly truly personifies Bronson’s value of teamwork – working to provide her patients the best possible care, and make her team the best it can be.

The DAISY Award is supported by the not-for-profit DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation. Bonnie and J. Mark Barnes created this foundation and award as a way to remember their son, J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick had a disease that attacked his body and was in the hospital for a long time. His nurses did such a great job with him that the Barnes family created an award that continues to recognize the excellent work nurses do every day.
