Garth Brooks was planning to kick off his world tour with a series of stops in Ireland last year, but just weeks before opening night, Dublin officials decided not to give Brooks permission to perform all five concerts in Croke Park. The shows were subsequently canceled, leaving thousands of fans disappointed. Brooks later called it one of the most heartbreaking moments of his life, but the old adage "the show must go on" still rings true, sort of. A play based on the event is set to debut this year.

Titled Are You There Garth? It's Me, Margaret, ,the name is an ode to Judy Blume's young adult book Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Written by playwright Fiona Looney, the play will chronicle the entire saga, from Brooks' initial decision to play five shows in Croke Park to the embattled debates with city officials to the final cancelation of all five sold out shows.

The show will run in Cork, Dublin, Galway and Limerick, Ireland. Irish actress Deirdre O'Kane will assume the role of a country music fan who is deeply disappointed by the saga that became known as "Garthgate." Although O'Kane doesn't know much about Garth Brooks, she firmly believes in Looney's vision. "I love that she's taken one person's story in the midst of all that sheer madness and gone to the heart of what it really meant to somebody," O'Kane says.

Brooks is currently touring in the United States. See his 2015 tour dates here.
