A great source of cooking and camaraderie, a good fire is essential to the camping experience. But a good fire can quickly turn bad if you do not follow these important safety tips from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

  1. Never leave a fire unattended.
  2. Keep campfires small.
  3. Be sure to have water nearby.
  4. When putting a campfire out, drown it with water and then stir until it is cold to the touch.
  5. Dispose of charcoal by dunking it in water and placing it into a metal container.
  6. Only use fireworks in driveways, parking lots, on gravel or in dirt-covered areas.

Nine out of 10 wildfires are caused by people, which means nine out of 10 wildfires are preventable.
