New Movie Releases: July 2016
The summer movie season continues next month with new Ghostbusters, a big friendly giant, another Purge night and Star Trek Beyond, and that’s not even half of it. Those of you interested in something a little less blockbuster-y should definitely add Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice to your must-see list, along with the James Wan-produced horror flick Lights Out. For details on all of these movies and more, read on for our complete guide to July’s new movie releases.
Watch Billy Crystal’s Wonderful Eulogy For Muhammad Ali
Comedian and actor Billy Crystal had been close friends with Muhammad Ali for many years, beginning with his appearance at an event honoring the legendary boxer in 1974. That moment — featured on ABC — helped launch Crystal’s career, and the comedian and boxer remained friends until Ali passed away last week. A special service was held for Ali last night in Louisville, Kentucky, where Crystal spoke at length about his dearly departed friend, delivering a eulogy that was equal parts heartwarming and humorous.
‘Friday the 13th’ Reboot Will Show You a New Jason Voorhees Origin Story, Kind Of
By now, Jason Voorhees’ origin story has become as redundant and exhausting as the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. He was a kid with a physical abnormality who drowned because some careless teenage camp counselors were too busy gettin’ busy and smoking pot. We get it. But apparently we don’t get it enough because that long-developing Friday the 13th reboot is going to rehash Jason’s origins yet again — this time revealing even more needless information about the slasher boogeyman’s family history.
Amy Schumer Will Terrorize a Bachelor Party in ‘Who Invited Her?’
Instead of yet another bachelor party comedy about a bunch of bros bro-ing down with booze and mostly naked women who barely have names, how about one in which Amy Schumer invites herself to the big bro party and disrupts all their bro-fun? That sounds perfect, actually. Good news: that’s the plot of a real movie that’s really going to happen!
Rumor: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ May Have the Perfect Villain
Back in January, a (literally) huge villain was rumored for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but a subsequent report on the new characters joining James Gunn’s follow-up hinted that the previous story may have been a bit premature. The latest scoop on Marvel’s intergalactic sequel doubles down on one of those rumors by potentially revealing the identity of Elizabeth Debicki’s character — if true, it opens the door for another major comic book character to appear.
Wolverine Almost Had a Much Bigger Role in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was teased in the second trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, but given that his part was more of a glorified cameo, that little teaser may have felt like a spoiler to some — even though Wolverine appearing in a new X-Men movie is hardly surprising. Hardly. As it turns out, Jackman almost had a bigger role to play in the new sequel, but it was ultimately reduced to avoid detracting from Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique.
Rumor: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Adds a Little ‘Planet Hulk’ to the Mix
Typically, we approach rumors with a healthy amount of skepticism, as so many of them ultimately turn out to be false. But the latest report on Thor: Ragnarok echoes a very similar rumor from earlier this year, which reveals how Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is introduced in the sequel and what brings him together with Chris Hemsworth’s mighty thunder god. It also suggests that the previously abandoned Planet Hulk story line may have found its way into Ragnarok — if only just a teensy tiny little bit. Potential spoilers ahead, obviously.
Dan Aykroyd Praises New ‘Ghostbusters’ and the Internet’s Reaction Is Predictably Ugly
It’s become impossible to talk about Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters without acknowledging the unsavory reactions from fans of the original who have declared the reboot cinema non grata (to say the least). It’s also been suggested that perhaps some words of support from the original cast members might help soothe the aggressive fanbase, that if their so-called childhood heroes give Feig’s film the stamp of approval (as if their willingness to cameo in the film wasn’t endorsement enough), maybe the anti-reboot fan contingent would settle down and come to accept a crew of female Ghostbusters. That’s not the case, as OG Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd shared his positive thoughts on Feig’s reboot, inspiring a slew of predictably angry reactions.
Even Jeremy Irons Thinks ‘Batman vs. Superman’ Was ‘Overstuffed’
Jeremy Irons isn’t one of those actors that’s going to say what you want to hear…unless you didn’t particularly like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and what you want to hear is that he agrees with you. Zack Snyder’s ambitious superhero project failed to impress critics and inspired a wave of negative reviews — all of which Jeremy Irons believes the film rightfully deserved. And he was in it, so he should know.
‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Release Delayed to 2018
Following an on-set accident in which Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien sustained serious injuries, the future of the next installment in the franchise has been left a little unclear. Production was recently suspended indefinitely on The Death Cure as the actor required more time to recover than previously assumed, leading to an extended delay that would make reassembling the entire cast and crew fairly difficult. But it looks as though the sequel will eventually come together after all — though not as quickly as some fans had hoped.
