Mel Gibson Could Have Played Odin in the ‘Thor’ Movies
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is loaded with great actors in supporting roles, from Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Douglas to upcoming additions like Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton. It’s names like those that help enrich the MCU; it’s harder to dismiss these movies as silly comic book fare when you have someone like Sir Anthony Hopkins playing Odin. As it turns out, that specific bit of casting wouldn’t have happened if Marvel went with an earlier choice: Mel Gibson.
Dwayne Johnson to Star in New Action Flick Described as ‘Die Hard in China’
Dwayne Johnson continues to be the hardest working actor in Hollywood, seemingly immune to the flaws that plague mere mortals — like getting tired and needing a good nap. The actor has added yet another project to his ambitious pile, which already includes Fast 8, Jumanji, that recently announced Robert Ludlum cinematic universe, and (probably) Doc Savage. Basically, Dwayne Johnson is making you look lazy right now.
Grab Your Family, ‘The Fast and the Furious’ Is Returning to Theaters This Summer
To honor the 15th anniversary of the movie that started it all, Universal is re-releasing The Fast and the Furious in theaters nationwide. Revisiting your introduction to Dom, Letty, Brian and the magical world of NOS should help make the wait for Fast 8 a little easier, but you’ll only have a limited time to see the original film on the big screen.
‘Clown’ Trailer: The Director of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Exploits a Common Fear
Back before he made Cop Car and landed the highly-coveted Spider-Man: Homecoming directing gig, Jon Watts made a little horror film called Clown. The twisted result of a collaboration between Watts and Christopher D. Ford, Clown tells the story of a man whose life is torturously taken over by a seemingly innocuous clown suit that turns out to be far more than a mere costume.
Rumor: More ‘Suicide Squad’ Characters Could Get Their Own Spinoffs
Recent news of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn spinoff confirms what we already assumed: she’s the best part of Suicide Squad. But if a new rumor proves to be true, she may not be the only charismatic member of Task Force X, as Warner Bros. might be considering giving a couple of her villainous co-stars spinoffs of their very own. To be honest, a Captain Boomerang solo movie doesn’t seem like something that would ever actually happen, but WB has done wackier things in recent years.
Disney Considers Making Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’ Part of Your World
Disney’s live-action remakes have become just as inevitable as death and taxes — not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, considering how well The Jungle Book turned out (on the other hand, there’s that whole Alice in Wonderland thing…). And like that project, the studio may once again be setting up a competing live-action remake, this time turning their sights to The Little Mermaid.
‘The Wolverine 2’ Rumor May Reveal Interesting New Villain Details
The Wolverine 2 is at least partially inspired by Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan comic, but that doesn’t give us a whole lot to go on, especially when it comes to the villains Hugh Jackman will face in his big farewell to the X-Men franchise. Narcos star Boyd Holbrook was recently cast as an original villain created specifically for the sequel, with Richard E. Grant set to play a mysterious mad scientist. Again, that doesn’t tell us much, but a new rumor may help fill in those blanks.
Netflix to Officially Begin Streaming New Disney Films in September
Way back in 2012 (or at least it feels way back), Netflix and Disney struck a deal for all of Disney’s movies — including Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm — to stream exclusively on Netflix Instant. According to the terms of their agreement, the deal wouldn’t kick in until 2016, which just so happens to be the year in which we are currently living. As announced today, Netflix will officially begin streaming Disney films in September, but that doesn’t mean the studio’s entire library will magically appear in your Instant browser.
‘Star Trek Beyond’ to Premiere in IMAX at Comic-Con With a Live Score
The new trailer for Star Trek Beyond premiered over the weekend following a 50th anniversary fan event in Los Angeles attended by director Justin Lin, producer J.J. Abrams, and a few members of the cast. In addition to screening the latest sneak peek at the upcoming sequel, fans were treated to some exclusive footage and a special announcement regarding the world premiere. If you’re a Trek fan and you’re able to make it to San Diego Comic-Con this summer, you should probably do that.
‘Fruit Ninja’ Is the Next Mobile Game Heading to the Big Screen
If you had any doubt that a mobile game would make for a successful film, look no further than The Angry Birds Movie, which effortlessly claimed the top spot at the box office over the weekend. So it’s not particularly surprising that another popular mobile game is getting an animated film adaptation, this one based on the slice-happy Fruit Ninja series. Scoff if you must, but never underestimate the power of brand recognition.
