If you're due to renew your vehicle registration here in the state of Michigan, don't put it off.

We know, we like to procrastinate with that stuff, too. But, starting on January 1, 2017, vehicle registration prices will be going up in Michigan.

M-Live reports that the increase comes as a result of the state's new road funding plan, and under the law vehicle registrations in the state will go up by 20 percent in 2017. If you're not big on math, that means that if you normally pay $100 to renew your registration, in 2017 you'll be shelling out $120.

The good news is that vehicle registration fees can be paid to Michigan's Secretary of State up to six months in advance, so if you usually renew in the first six months of the year, you may be able to renew by December 31 without paying the new fee.

You can find out if you're eligible to renew now via this handy tool on the Secretary of State's website.

The state's new road funding plan is expected to generate nearly $400 million a year in new revenue for roads. In addition to the hike in vehicle registration fees, Michigan's gas tax on both diesel and regular gasoline will rise to 26.3 cents beginning January 1.
