Video from Bobby Guy's seat and trackside photos from the 100th Indianapolis 500, May 29, 2016.

I was there as the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 set the world record for the largest single-day sporting event in history.

There are approximately 32,000,000 citizens in this country. On May 29, 2016, more than 350,000 were in attendance at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 100th running of the Indy 500. Do the math: 1 of every 925 Americans was there.

From the time my friend Rick and I entered the front gate, the energy was palpable- you could feel the excitement in the air. The magic came alive as past champions like Johnny Rutherford, A.J. Foyt and Al Unser Sr. drove historic cars around the 2.5 mile circuit.

Then the command was given to start the engines of the modern machines, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 230 m.p.h. The fearless drivers battled g-forces and each other for an incredible 200 laps, diving into the turns and making diving, daring passes. Pit stops are also key and it turns out gas mileage was the difference as rookie Alexander Rossi had just enough fuel to coast across the finish line to take the checkered flag. He would need a tow truck to get to victory circle.
