Unique Steel’Homes Of The Future’ Here In West Michigan?
These amazing homes required no maintenance and were quick to build. What better place to build them but Ohio?
After the troops returned from WWII, there was a huge demand for new homes to be built quickly and inexpensively. Enter The Lustron! Built from steel panels with a baked on enamel finish (think of the stove in your kitchen), they required no painting, no termite control (they are steel!) and you could clean it with a garden hose.
I have found 2 of these right here in West Michigan!
This one, in Kalamazoo...
That was the only picture I could get before getting yelled at by the owner.
And this one in Paw Paw. It was put on the market one day and sold the next!
Look Familiar?
Yes, that is a steel roof as well.
There are several other IMAGES that you can Find here as well.
What was really cool about these houses is that they could be disassembled and reassembled in a matter of weeks. there were only around 2,500 made before the company went under but most still survive today. Have you seen one of these houses?
