The Young Novelists, ‘Two of a Kind’ [Exclusive Premiere]
The Young Novelists are premiering a brand-new song, "Two of a Kind," exclusively for readers of The Boot. Press play below to hear the track from the Canadian folk duo.
Husband and wife Graydon James and Laura Spink describe their nostalgia-drenched sound as "sad songs for happy people." The idea for "Two of a Kind" didn't come easy: The song was inspired by an overheard conversation in Goderich, Ontario, in which a woman was trying to figure out how to make a choice between two men who were interested in her, and it took the band a long while to figure out how to turn that concept into a song.
"It popped into my head: 'What if the two guys she has to choose from are the identical twin brothers I know?'" James says. "But I couldn't make that idea into a song until I added a bit of a twist: that the 'two of a kind' in the title aren't the identical twin brothers, but how the narrator feels about his connection with the woman who is not necessarily choosing him."
"Two of a Kind" appears on the Young Novelists' forthcoming album In City & Country, an exploration of the parallels between small-town and big-city living. It's due out on May 4; visit TheYoungNovelists.com for more details.
