Portage Shuts Down 3 Wells After PFAS Detected In Water

The biggest news story of the area this weekend was the detection of PFAS in the water supply in Parchment, MI and how a state of emergency was declared for the entire city and accepted by the state of Michigan. It now seems that trace elements of PFAS have been detected in three wells in the city of Portage as well, inspiring the city to shut them down.

The city has a total of 20 wells, three of which contain traceable levels of contaminents. Today begins the project of connecting the Parchment water supply to the Kalamazoo water supply, in a temporary attempt to provide clean water to Parchment, while their system flushes away the PFAS.

Further tests will be conducted over the next month to determain if the levels found in the Portage wells are of major concern, according to MLive. The director of the Portage Department of Transportation and Utilities, Kendra Gwinn says the shutting down of the wells is simply a precautionary measure.
