New regulations on fishing bait went into effect in June, 2016 specifying any personally caught bait now must be used within the same body of water, or connecting bodies of water, where it was captured.

This means you have to scare up your own bait at the site before you fish or stop at a local bait shop- no more bringing the cooler of worms from your backyard or minnows from the last fishing trip.

Michigan Department of natural Resources (DNR) has launched the Retail Bait Shop Locator, a comprehensive and interactive map featuring licensed bait retailers that sell minnows, wigglers and crayfish to the general public.

“We would advise the public to always call any listed retail outlet found in the application before making a trip to purchase bait,” said DNR fisheries biologist Tom Goniea. “Some locations are seasonal or have varied hours and may not carry an angler’s preferred bait.”
