The City of Battle Creek has now begun to destroy the old Michigan State Police Post on Columbia Ave. and LaVista Blvd.

The demolition began Wednesday, and is expected to last several days so the building can be brought down completely and the land reseeded for grass. The city has owned the MSP post since 2012, after the state police left for the Marshall Regional Law Enforcement Center. Dr. Pete VanVranken, local veterinarian and businessman, is set to buy the property, but on the condition the city purchase adjoining land parcels from the state, and that the city demolish the building.

Dr. Pete recently opened a new veterinary clinic next door to the MSP Post, and previously told 95.3 WBCK that he doesn’t have any immediate plans to redevelop the land.

The City of Battle Creek asks people in the area to respect fences put up around the demolition, for their own safety and the safety of others.
