More debate on the fate of the Paw Paw Redskins is coming and could result in a change, removing the name and the mascot.

This has been a subject of discussion in the Paw Paw School district for years and it never seems to go away. While there are people protesting the name saying it is racist and a form of bullying. Here are some of the statements from those protesting the name.

They say the mascot is racist, and serves as a form of bullying and harassment for indigenous children.

The State School Board has already strongly recommended that all schools get rid of mascots and logos that could be offensive

"I think the mascot out here really needs to change, when we look at racism it’s not just a black or white issue there’s people of color of all different backgrounds, and one that seems to be getting ignored a lot is Native Americans and the mascot here is a great example of that and it needs to change,” said activist Andrew Alm.

“They need to remove this mascot and they need to honor the resolutions that the tribes in the area have spread, updated and sent them,” said activist Monica Padula.

Padula states that the rally is a reaction to the lack of response from the Paw Paw school board to requests to stop using stereotypes of Native American customs and traditions and "a long-noted term of horror towards native people," that being the word "redskins."

Yet, most village residents and Paw Paw school students see it as a figure of pride and strength. What are your thoughts?
