One time only, on December 17, snowmobiles will cross the Mackinac Bridge for the first time ever in its 60 year history.

Until now, for snowmobiles to get between peninsulas, they had to be transported on a trailer or driven across the frozen ice. For the first time ever, on December 17, the Mighty Mac will be open to snowmobile traffic for a special event.

The St. Ignace Visitors Bureau and Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum have partnered for a unique event allowing vintage snowmobiles access.

The biggest draw is going to be the cool factor of taking you snowmobile across the Mackinac Bridge. Literally no one has done it in the bridge's history.

-Quincy Westhuis, assistant director, St. Ignace Visitor's Bureau

The sled drivers must be at least 25 years old and be outfitted with special wheels to cross from Michigan's lower peninsula to the upper. Registration is $35 per snowmobile; that includes the bridge fare plus lunch and awards in St. Ignace after the crossing. Passenger fee is $30. Call 906-643-6950 for more information.
