Watch the incredible rescue video.

A typical day at the office is anything but typical for law enforcement.

Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers Hutson and Gates got an unusual call on the afternoon of September 27, 2015. A whitetail deer had become trapped in a batting cage at a local high school, it's 8-point rack entangled in the netting.

In a panic, the stag lept and twisted, trying to get free.

There's no training for this, the officers had to improvise. PSO Hutson secured the buck’s rear legs with a fire-rescue strap allowing PSO Gates to cut the antlers free of the net. At first dazed, the deer then regained its feet and bounded off to freedom as Hutson and Gates high-fived.

Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers wear a single patch and badge that simultaneously represents their responsibilities as police officers, fire fighters, and medical first responders. Deer management is just a non-traditional police service that officers have encountered in the past.

Vehicle-deer crashes are a year-round problem in Michigan, especially during the spring and fall as the state’s estimated 2,000,000 deer are most active during these times. Each year there are more than 60,000 vehicle-deer crashes reported in the State of Michigan.
