Michigan School Goes Viral for Dads vs. Students Homecoming Game
In an unexpected turn of events, a forfeit by their opponents led to an unforgettable homecoming night for students and families at Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Michigan.
Shepherd Homecoming Was Almost Canceled, Then the Dads Took the Field

Shepherd High School found a way to keep its school spirit alive when homecoming was in jeopardy. Now, the heartwarming story is getting national attention! I first spotted it on CBS News, and honestly, how could it not tug at your heartstrings?
When Standish-Sterling Central High School forfeited its scheduled game against Shepherd because of a shortage of players, homecoming plans suddenly took a turn. With just two days to go, Shepherd had a tough choice to make: cancel the game or find another way to get everyone under the Friday night lights?
The local community was quick to step up, and a dads/role models group quickly formed to take on their kids in a game of flag football. Doesn't this sound like a Hollywood movie? Spoiler alert: the kids won 32-28.

But this brings me to another point, why do I keep seeing more and more headlines about local Michigan schools ending their football season early due to lack of players? Bloomingdale cancelled their season in 2025, and I recently heard my hometown of Allegan cancelled their varsity football season after only five players showed up for team picture day.
With rural school numbers dwindling and rising household costs, I can't say I'm surprised though. Who has the money to pay for extracurriculars, let alone the gas to travel to away games?
