The parking scam currently circulating around Michigan, particularly in Detroit, has been a growing concern for residents and visitors attending large events like the NFL games or the Detroit Auto Show.

Scammers set up fake parking lots or spaces near event venues and advertise them online or through flyers. They will usually offer parking at a lower rate than official or well-known lots in the area to entice drivers.

These fake parking spaces might be in private or unauthorized areas, and the scammers often give the illusion of legitimacy by providing official-looking tickets or receipts.

Typically, when people try and use these spots, they get charged with bogus fees, and find their car has either only been broken into or later on towed. Fake tickets are also a key to figuring out if you've been scammed.

Signs of the Scam in Michigan

  • Pricing:
    • If the pricing seems a little too good to be true, espeacilly if you're in downtown Detroit, Grand Rapids, or another Michigan city. It could be signs of a scam
  • Unmarked Locations
    • If you don't see any signage of it being a legitamate parking lot, chances are it is probably not. Look for permits or signage if you can.
  • Pressure to Pay Quickly:
    • If you're rushed to pay, or they put you in a third-party service, or told spots are running out, act now, chances are it's not legit.
