One of the daily tasks that someone has to do in life is check their mailbox for their mail which may have a combination of bills, notices, letters, packages, and other personal items. On a good day, someone is lucky to come home to no mail as this means there are no bills due and nothing to be concerned about. Delivering mail is a thankless job that many of us have taken for granted.

No matter the weather or road conditions, mail carriers in Michigan have to leave their homes to spend the day at work. Their workday consists of riding around their route and delivering mail to the appropriate address. Some people are nice enough to keep their mailboxes clean and their walkways clear and others buy gifts as tokens of appreciation.

Without mail carriers we would be in a position where we would have to either deliver all our mail ourselves or would have to go and pick it up from a central location, which I'm sure would be crowded. There are a few days every year that postal service workers don't have to report for duty, but new news says that another day is being added to that list.

As we all know, mail carriers are considered to be government employees, so all federal holidays are a day of rest for them. This can be a blessing as they get time off but normally means more work the next day as mail piles up. Another day is being added to the federal holidays list, giving mail carriers another day off.

January 9th is being made into a federal holiday as a day of honor for the late President Jimmy Carter who passed away on December 29th of 2024. USPS has announced that their limited package delivery service will still run but all other services will be unavailable for the day.

All mail services will resume as normal on January 10th, but this is something to get used to as no one will receive mail on January 9th for the foreseeable future as we pay homage to an amazing man and President.
