It's that time of the year where we are all bundled up, have to go out and warm our cars up or use the automatic start, and break out the scrapers, shovels, ice-melting salt. The wintertime in Michigan can be one of the most bitter times of the year, while others are celebrating the snow. Southwest Michigan is one of the regions that gets the worst snow due to lake effect snow from Lake Michigan.

As someone who grew up having to shovel the walkway, sidewalk, and driveway of our home, wrapping up in multiple coats, sweatpants, socks, and other warm clothing was something I didn't look forward to. Although I didn't enjoy being cold or outside during Michigan winters, I did get out and shovel some other homes in the family and neighborhood.

We have already gotten some serious snow this year so the shovels, snowblowers, and plows have already been busy. The first couple of months of 2025 should have plenty of snow and cold weather, which means those tools will get plenty of use this winter. Especially since Kalamazoo has placed a city ordinance in place that will have you fined if you don't clear your sidewalk in a considerate amount of time.

So, how does any of this apply to cash and why would you need some? Well, first and foremost, it may be nice to have some cash in your wallet/pocket in case you get snowed in and then have tip money for your pizza delivery. Or simply, just having cash and not relying on electronic systems is never a bad idea.

On the other hand, cash may be helpful in getting your sidewalk cleared while you have to do no more than raise your hand to reach in your wallet. I referenced shoveling sidewalks and driveways for neighbors and family members, well that's because they would give me cash to do it.

Why wouldn't I want to make money for doing something that doesn't take a lot of effort? That's exactly what some kids are thinking now as they are looking for ways to earn cash over their winter break and snow days. There are tons of young kids and teens going out looking to make a few bucks in exchange for a service.

Also, you may find that there are some kids who may decide to shovel even if you don't have money or don't offer it and those are the kids that give us hope for the world. Yes, some of them can take digital payments but sometimes they don't always work, and some kids don't have access to that technology.

So, the next time you're out and about, make a stop at the nearest ATM and take out a few bucks to have on hand. Not only will it make some kids day, but it'll also make yours as you see the smile on their face and have a clear sidewalk, walkway, and driveway!
