It Is Not Illegal To Warm Your Car In Michigan
Rumors over the past week are that letting your car warm up in your drive, unattended is illegal. This is absolutely not true. Some people see something on Facebook and right off jump on the "I saw it on the internet so it must be true" bandwagon. While it is true that some cities have LOCAL laws that prohibit you from leaving your running car unattended. This is not true as a Michigan state law and only applies if you leave your keys in the car. You can still use a remote start device that allows you to keep your keys with you and your car locked.
As reported by News Channel 3,
The Michigan Vehicle Code only prohibits leaving a car unattended without stopping the motor on or near a highway. Any extra rules, like if you can be ticketed in your own driveway, are on a city-by-city basis.
They did also report,
“Here in Kalamazoo we do have a similar ordinance,” said Kalamazoo Public Safety Lt. Lance Handlogten. “It’s not about private property, it’s about public areas, so parking lots, streets, highways.”
...look into getting a remote start system, because then you won’t have to worry about your keys being in the car while you are not.
