No, Cinco de Mayo is not the Mexican equivalent to our 4th of July. According to Wikipedia, it commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

For most Americans, it means tequila, Dos Equis, tacos, chimichangas, and hot sauce! Where is the best place for dinner on Cinco de Mayo in Kalamazoo? FourSquare has some ideas:

  • El Gallo Blanco, 2838 Portage St.
  • Qdoba Mexican Grill, various locations
  • Los Amigos, 3317 Stadium Drive
  • Taco Bob's, 248 S. Kalamazoo Mall or 4121 Portage St.

Also recommended are the lobster tacos at Central City Tap House, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, and the enchilada at Food Dance, 401 E. Michigan Ave.

I'd definitely recommend El Gallo Blanco, it has been fantastic each time I've been there. If you'd like to brush up on your Español, I'm pretty sure every single waiter is bilingual.

However you celebrate, whatever you do, remember it is only Tuesday. Pace yourselves, people.
