A formal investigation may be pending as the state's Attorney General says Family Fitness has been charging excessive cancellation fees.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette told West Michigan-based gym Family Fitness that it should immediately cease and desist its unlawful practice of misleading members into believing they must make additional payments after they cancelled their gym membership personal training contracts.

When consumers enter into contracts, the law requires that they be treated honestly and fairly. Using the threat of enormous penalties as a way of keeping customers locked into membership agreements misleads consumers about their legal rights.

More than 100 complaints have been filed against Family Fitness since 2011, claiming customers were told they still had to pay the full value of their initial contract even after cancellation.Family Fitness has 14 Michigan locations including 6051 Constitution Blvd. in Portage.
