Don Gallardo, ‘The Golden Rule’ [Exclusive Premiere]

Americana singer-songwriter Don Gallardo is premiering his new song "The Golden Rule" exclusively for readers of The Boot. Press play below to listen.

Gallardo penned "The Golden Rule" after he found himself inspired by both the classic moral teaching (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you") and his experiences as a father while heading to a co-writing session with friend and fellow songwriter, Mando Saenz.

"We were sitting around, and I was discussing that I wanted to write something with the name "The Golden Rule,"" Gallardo tells The Boot. "We got to working out verses, and I had said to Mando that I wanted to kind of make this about me talking to my son when we were older. Kind of like a conversation piece with him."

The song features banjo picking from Richard Bailey of the bluegrass band the SteelDrivers.

"He asked what I was feeling. I told him I was feeling like a dirty, swampy feel, like the guitar in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but on banjo," Gallardo recalls. "He played it perfectly. Then Clint Maine, who has been playing guitar with me for almost seven years, came in later and added a guitar."

"The Golden Rule" appears on Gallardo's forthcoming fifth full-length album, Still Here, which was recorded in East Nashville. The artist made his way to Music City by way of Northern California, where he worked as a songwriter before making the move. Once he got to Nashville, Gallardo started performing and writing songs, some of which have appeared in episodes of CMT's Nashville and the CW's The Vampire Diaries.
