This Southern Michigan House Inspired the Book and Movie ‘The House with a Clock in Its Walls’

The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a beloved children's novel and soon to be movie with Jack Black and it all started with this home in Marshall, Michigan.

The house, at 407 North Madison in Marshall, was built in 1873. In 1973, the story inspired by the house began thrilling young readers. The House with a Clock in Its Walls is described as:

Lewis had always wanted to live in a house like Uncle Jonathan's -- full of marble fireplaces and secret passageways and dozens of unused, unexplored rooms. And living with Uncle Jonathan, a real wizard, was full of fun and surprises.

According to Variety, a movie adaptation is in the works,

No start date has been set for the project, which has been adapted by Eric Kripke from the 1973 John Bellairs book, which was illustrated by Edward Gorey. The story is set with a recently orphaned 10-year-old boy named Lewis Barnavelt moving to the town of New Zebedee, Mich., to live with his mysterious uncle — who turns out to be a warlock, while his next-door neighbor Florence Zimmermann is a witch.
