Watch Brett Eldredge, Lauren Alania and More Field Questions From Country Haters
During the 2017 CMA Music Festival, Buzzfeed sat down with some of country music's big names and asked them to respond to questions from haters of the genre. If the artists' answers don't win you over, we don't know what will.
Readers can press play above to watch the hilarity unfold: Brett Eldredge, Brett Young, Trace Adkins, Lauren Alaina, Rascal Flatts and Phil Vassar all field questions from country music haters, and try to explain some of the mysteries of the genre to their non-fans. Questions range from "What does "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" mean?" to "Does Jesus always have to take the wheel?" -- both nods to well-known country songs -- and the answers are both adorable and eloquent.
When one country music hater asks "Why whiskey?" Vassar has a succinct response: The beverage is a more sing-able type of alcohol than, say, pinot noir. And in reply to the question "Does every country music star grow up on a farm?" ... well, pretty much everyone offers up a resounding "No."
The video concludes with the artists involved talking about how they were either converted to liking country music or born into enjoying it, and expounding on just what country music entails.
"If you like lyrics about real people and real situations, maybe you should listen to it," Adkins says. Adds Young, "I don't know what the natural inclination to push back against country music is, but it's timeless, and it's not going away, so give it a shot."
