Carrie Underwood Moves to Universal Music Group
Carrie Underwood has a new record label home: Universal Music Group's Capitol Records Nashville.
The news of Underwood's new label and worldwide recording agreement was announced via a press release on Tuesday (March 28). UMG's Nashville presence, in addition to Capitol Nashville, also includes EMI Records Nashville, MCA Nashville and Mercury Nashville.
"As a talented writer, recording artist, performer and actor, Carrie is that exceptionally rare artist who can do it all," says Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. Adds Mike Dungan, UMG Nashville's chairman and CEO, “Carrie’s vast talents and creative bravery show that she is an artist who is prepared to take on a wide range of artistic challenges. We are excited for the future and honored by her decision to make Universal Music Group her [new] label partner."
Following her win on American Idol in May of 2005, Underwood signed a record deal with Arista Nashville and 19 Recordings, part of the Sony Music Entertainment family. She released five studio albums with the label -- 2005's Some Hearts, 2007's Carnival Ride, 2009's Play On, 2012's Blown Away and 2015's Storyteller -- as well as a greatest hits album and a live DVD.
"It’s so inspiring to me as an artist to feel this excited about the future. The incredible team at UMG shares the heart and passion I have for music as well as the drive, and their innovative spirit has shown that, together, the possibilities are endless," Underwood says. "I also want to be sure to thank every single person who has played a part in my recording career so far. I will be forever grateful to them for all we achieved together."
Following a busy 2016, during which she hit the road for her Storyteller Tour (and then extended the trek) and co-headlined a tour with Keith Urban in Australia and New Zealand, Underwood has admitted that she doesn’t really have a plan for her career in 2017.
“I think I’m gonna enjoy a little time with my family, and then start writing, maybe, and just seeing what I’m ready to do,” Underwood says. “There’s no real plans … Being home off the road, every time we go home for a little short 24-, 48-hour stint, I just drop stuff off and leave again. And now I’m trying to make sense of life.”
