Expect to hear some new styles from Brett Young on his upcoming second album.

In an interview with his record label, Big Machine Label Group, Young explains his approach to his sophomore project, which will incorporate two genres of music that have influenced him since childhood.

One thing that me and [producer] Dann Huff really want to incorporate into this record is just that I grew up listening to soul music and R&B music, and so there’ll be some production stuff where you can hear a little bit of a throwback thing," he says.

While there may be some new elements on the production side of the album, he affirms that he'll follow the model of his debut album when it comes to lyrics, using his life as musical inspiration.

"The songs are similar. I’m going to write about my life every single time," Young explains. "I think that’s the kind of music I want to listen to is when I feel like people are being genuine as artists, and so I always want to be that and be transparent."

As a new artist, Young has made quite the impression on fans and the industry alike, scoring three chart-topping singles off his self-titled debut album with "Sleep Without You," "In Case You Didn't Know" and "Like I Loved You." His current single, "Mercy," could see itself in that same position. After finishing an opening run on Lady Antebellum's world tour in 2017, which included writing sessions on the road with Charles Kelley, Young is currently in the studio working on the second album.

Fans could potentially hear a single off the new project in summer of 2018. He's slated to open for Thomas Rhett on his 2018 Life Changes Tour starting in April and running well into the fall. Young also recently got a career-changing surprise from Reba McEntire, who called to let him know that he was among the early-announced winners in the 2018 ACM Awards. Young was crowned Best New Male Vocalist of the Year.
