Blake Shelton settled on If I'm Honest for the title of his upcoming new album, but during a recent show, the singer joked that the disc could have been named something ... a bit more blunt.

At an album release concert at Los Angeles' Honda Stage on Monday night (May 9), Shelton explained that he was, early on, contemplating album titles with Warner Music Nashville's Shane Tarleton.

“I was like, ‘Man, I want it to be -- I need a title that represents a timeline, like 12 or 13 months of my life, like if somebody took those months and wrote a story about it, that’s what I want the album to represent,' and we kept saying like, 12 Months and Holy Crap,” Shelton recalls (quote via E!). “Finally, he was like, ‘What do you mean by that?’ I was just like, ‘I just want to tell the truth about what happened.'”

And so, Shelton's new collection of songs became known as If I'm Honest.

“I figured, since everybody else is cashing in on my life, I might as well as get some of that, too," the singer jokes.

Previously, Shelton has said that when listeners hear his 15 new songs, "they may not know what happened to me, but they’re gonna know how I felt about it." The inspiration for some songs, though, may be fairly apparent -- for example, "I Bet You Still Think About Me."

“It’s basically what it sounds like: At some point, whether you go through a divorce or a breakup or whatever, once you get past the anger and the frustration of it all, you kind of go into the sad part of it where it’s just like, ‘Gosh, how come that didn’t work out?’" Shelton admits. "And that’s what this song is about: Even though stuff didn’t work out, I bet you miss me a little bit. It’s a sad song.”

Fans have already heard two other songs that also have relatively up-front themes: "Came Here to Forget" and "Go Ahead and Break My Heart."

If I'm Honest is set for release on May 20. The project is available for pre-order on iTunes.
