The Battle Creek City Commission will be considering the approval of a new business in the Beckley Road corridor.

According to the City Commission’s Agenda for their meeting Tuesday, a resolution will be introduced regarding the rezoning of the former Battle Creek Toys R Us building on Beckley Rd. near M-66, order to allow a U-Haul moving and self storage facility for use on the land. The Toys R Us building, which has been vacant and deteriorating since 2006, is 46,700 square feet and will be rehabbed to allow retail sales and “interior accessed self storage”; the parking lot will also be used for the eventual construction of exterior self-storage structures.

A public meeting was held on the issue of the rezoning in June, and the City Commission says no concerns were raised by citizens.

The Toys R Us lot is zoned to allow for businesses, but the zoning currently says that all businesses must be wholly contained in one enclosed building. The special rezoning is needed to allow for the exterior storage structures.

Further details of the application, including a map of the proposed business, can be found here.
