Watch Alabama Perform ‘Silver Wings’ in Honor of Merle Haggard
Putting their legendary harmonies on display in honor of the late, great Merle Haggard, Alabama performed Haggard's 1969 hit "Silver Wings" at the Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard tribute concert on Thursday night (April 6) in Nashville. Click play above to watch the touching tribute.
"The first two songs we learned to sing together onstage were two songs written and recorded by Merle Haggard," Alabama's Randy Owen told the crowd at Bridgestone Arena before launching into Haggard's mournful ballad about the silver wings of an airplane carrying away his lover. "Silver Wings" first appeared on the 1969 album A Portrait of Merle Haggard, and is widely considered one of Haggard's best songs.
Throughout the evening, Alabama were just one of more than 30 acts who paid tribute to Haggard in song. From Miranda Lambert's cover of "Misery and Gin" to Jake Owen and Chris Janson's collaboration on "Footlights," the concert was full of nothing but love for the late country icon, who passed away in 2016.
Other artists who took the stage to honor Haggard during Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard included Dierks Bentley, John Mellencamp, Keith Richards, Kenny Chesney, Sheryl Crow and Loretta Lynn. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefited the TJ Martell Foundation.
