WMU Crews Work Wonders and Remove 1 Million Gallons of Water from Waldo Stadium

The WMU Broncos played a rare Sunday game but they were lucky to have a place to play at all after flooding submerged Waldo Stadium.

Waldo Stadium was underwater at the time kickoff was scheduled for Saturday's Western Michigan University football game against MAC rival Akron. The Broncos and Zips agreed to postpone the game to Sunday, and that's when the real work began. The Detroit News reports "University workers and outside contractors worked through the night Saturday drying out the stadium, pumping out 36,000 gallons of water a minute — and more than 1 million gallons in all."

It was very surreal. What were able to do in less than 24 hours was really miraculous, in my opinion. We worked together as a team.

Kalamazoo College had stepped up and offered its football field on Sunday afternoon if Waldo Stadium could not be emptied, but the herculean efforts of the Western staff got the job done. The team, however, lost the game 14-13.
