More than 250 schools in Michigan will join students around the country in observing the 18th annual Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Thousands of Michigan students, along with their parents, teachers and community leaders, are expected to participate.

According to a press release, Wednesday's event is organized by the Michigan Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, working to create new, safe routes for children to travel to and from school, and promote mental and physical health.

“Walk to School Day helps schools to encourage parents and students to consider walking as an alternative for getting to school,” says Meg Thomas-Ackerman, Director Safe Routes to School. “Walking to and from school can be a simple way for students to get their recommended amount of daily physical activity.”

Walk to School Day is a great first step to encourage students to seek a lifetime of physical activity. It takes place nationally and internationally each year and promotes the growth of walkable communities.
