Toby Keith and Blake Shelton brought the ’90s nostalgia to the 2018 ACM Awards with a duet of Keith’s classic hit, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”

“It’s no secret that I like to have a good time, so I guess I’m a perfect match for this next artist,” Shelton joked as he enthusiastically introduced Keith to sing his signature hit. Their performance was part of the awards show’s country flashback series that recognized some of the most popular songs to come out of the genre in the ’90s.

The twosome were clearly having a ball during the performance, with the crowd loving it just as much, proving that ’90s country is timeless and lives in the hearts of all country fans. Many of the genre’s younger acts sang along to every word, including Lauren Alaina, Preston Brust of LoCash and Trip Howell of Lanco, while Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line raised a glass from their seats.

Shelton’s voice was on point as he provided his support for the song, while Keith’s long-awaited return to the ACM stage did not disappoint, sounding just as strong as he did in 1993 when the song was released, with him and Shelton high-fiving at song’s end.

Keith was a longtime staple at the ACM Awards, earning the designation of Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year consecutively in 2003 and 2004, and being honored with the ACM Career Achievement Award in 2014. Shelton also delivered his nostalgic “I Lived It” earlier in the show, and he was nominated for Single Record of the Year for “I’ll Name the Dogs.”
