Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ Video Posts Record YouTube, Spotify Debuts

Taylor Swift's over-the-top new video for "Look What You Made Me Do" set a new one-day record on YouTube after it debuted on Sunday night (Aug. 27).

Business Insider reports that the "Look What You Made Me Do" video raked in 43.2 million total views in its first 24 hours, surpassing the previous record South Korean rapper Psy set with his video for "Gentleman," which earned 36 million views on its debut day. "Look What You Made Me Do" averaged 30,000 views every minute in its first 24 hours, exceeding more than 3 million views each hour, according to YouTube. Swift's video sits at more than 56 million views as of Tuesday (Aug. 29).

Swift also broke YouTube's record for single-day lyric video views, exceeding the Chainsmokers and Coldplay‘s "Something Like This" by earning more than 19 million views in less than 24 hours. "Look What You Made Me Do" additionally set a new record for Spotify’s largest streaming day for a single track ever, according to Us Weekly, with streams exceeding 8 million.

Swift hits back at the negative publicity she has endured over the past few years over her dating life and public feuds with celebrities including Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry on "Look What You Made Me Do," which is the first single from her upcoming Reputation album. "I'm sorry the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now ... because she's dead," she says in the lyrics.

The "Look What You Made Me Do" video acts that out symbolically, featuring a zombie Taylor Swift rising from out of the grave, then flashing to scenes of Swift in a bath of diamonds, as a queen, a motorcycle outlaw and more.

Swift goes on to flash back to more innocent versions of her persona from the past before killing them off one by one, metaphorically setting the stage for the vengeance she vows in the lyrics: “But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time / Honey, I rose up from the dead / I do it all the time / I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined / I check it once, then I check it twice / Ooh, look what you made me do / Look what you made me do / Look what you made me do / Look what you just made me do."

Swift will release Reputation on Sept. 10, and she's announced the cities for a massive tour in support of the album.
