As of December 12, 978 people have died on Michigan's roadways due to crashes in 2017.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says in a release that in the past week there were 18 fatalities; compared to December 12, 2016, the year-to-date number of fatalities was down by 31.

However, the YTD serious injuries was at 5,608; that's 561 more than a year ago.

AAA Michigan says that with the winter weather we are now facing, motorists need to be prepared for travel, by taking steps like making sure your battery is in good condition and that your tires are properly inflated. You can go to MDOT's website for more information.
