Anglers in Southwest Michigan are ice fishing on inland lakes. However, snow and slush may make travel on the ice more difficult. Use caution and follow these 6 important safety tips from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Important Ice Fishing Safety Tips

  1. Always wear a flotation device
  2. Use the buddy system
  3. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return
  4. Take a cell phone
  5. Always check the ice thickness with a spud
  6. Use extreme caution near pressure cracks, inlets and outlets.

Panfish, pike and walleye are coming out of the lakes. On the Kalamazoo River, steelhead fishers are taking fish below the Allegan Dam. The DNR says try spawn, plugs or a jig and wax worm.
