Did your dog just get sprayed by a skunk.  Relax, the info below might help you through this surprisingly offensive situation.

Read through this entire story for multiple possible solutions to rid your dog and life of this odor.  Regardless of which method(s) you attempt please consider the following:

  • Stay calm
  • Do NOT let the dog back inside until he/she has been rinsed
  • Go to a vet immediately if the dog experiences swelling

Some of these solutions may not work for everyone.  In fact, Megan Brail of Portage, MI used the tip below from the Humane Society but had to do it 3 times to get the smell away.

Mix together:

  • 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide (available at any pharmacy)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap

Wearing rubber gloves, wash your dog with this solution immediately after they've been sprayed. DO NOT get the solution in their eyes. (If you don't have peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap on hand, use vinegar diluted with water.)

Make sure you shampoo and rinse your dog after using the mixture above.

Caution: Do NOT store this mixture or make it ahead of time, as the mixture could explode if left in a bottle.

PetMD suggests this very unlikely tip,

A feminine hygiene product: a perhaps unlikely solution, Konecny says a mixture of Massengill douche and water can help eliminate skunk odors. “For small to medium pets, use two ounces of Massengill with one gallon of water and for large dogs, you’ll want to double the amount of water and Massengill.” Pour the mixture over the dog until it is thoroughly soaked, wait 15 minutes and then rinse. Bathe afterwards with pet shampoo and rinse well. Again, consult your veterinarian on how often you should repeat.

Here's a tip you may find on the internet that you should NOT try according to MythBusters: Tomato Juice or Tomato Paste.  In fact, method that passed their tests is Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap (method explained at the top of this story.)

This final method maybe worth the money.  Businesses that offer pet grooming usually offer "skunk removal" services.  Let the professionals handle it!

Best of luck!
