In a new study by infogroup, Grand Rapids, Michigan ranks #5 on the list of hippest cities nationwide.

You can spot them in their thick-framed glasses and flannel, beards and thrift-store skirts...hipsters are everywhere. Why are so many in G.R.?

Hipsters are defined by more than just the cardigan and converse combo, the skinny-jeans and man-bun look. According to the researchers, "they are a group that frequents certain types of businesses, and whose communities share particular characteristics." Infogroup looked at music and live entertainment, tattoo parlors, record stores (vinyl, natch), bicycle dealers, thrift stores, coffee shops and brewers and ranked the top 10 U.S. cities.

  1. Seattle, Washington
  2. Portland, Oregon
  3. Denver, Colorado
  4. Sacramento, California
  5. Grand Rapids, Michigan
  6. San Diego, California
  7. Providence, Rhode Island
  8. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  9. San Francisco, California
  10. Rochester, New York

Thrift, coffee and tattoo shops placed highest Grand Rapids' concentration of businesses that attract hipsters, but it was the city's craft beer scene that propelled it to the #5 spot on the list.
