A new survey by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services denotes that 50% of the people living with HIV in Michigan are smokers. On the whole, just 21% of the adult population of the state light up.

Alarmingly, studies show that people living with HIV who smoke cigarettes are dying 12 years sooner from smoking-related illness such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke, before dying of HIV complications.

The goal of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' Tobacco Control Program is to help people living with HIV to quit smoking.
