The Kalamazoo City Commission met Monday night, and one of the items up for discussion was a controversial fountain in Bronson Park.

MLive reports that dozens of people showed up at city hall Monday about the Fountain of the Pioneers, with around 50 people speaking. Some called the fountain, which depicts a settler standing face to face with a Native American, a reminder of colonialism and America’s grim past, and said it belongs in a museum. Others were nuanced, saying that the fountain serves as an important reminder and teaching tool about America’s history.

No vote was scheduled on the fate of the fountain, but the discussion is expected to continue as the city attempts to raise $2.8 million to renovate Bronson Park.
