Michigan State Police Post in Battle Creek To Be Sold, Demolished
The Battle Creek City Commission will be meeting again on Tuesday, and they have a few items of note on their agenda.
According to the agenda, one item that will be up for a vote is a deal to finally sell the land the vacant Michigan State Police post sits on, at the corner of Columbia Ave. and LaVista Blvd.
Cory McNeal Sentenced To Probation For Relationship With Student
A former teacher and high school basketball coach at the Portage Public Schools has now been sentenced to probation for misconduct with a student.
Cory McNeal appeared in Kalamazoo County Court Wednesday, and was sentenced to two years after pleading guilty to felonious assault.
Homer Teacher Resigns Over Misconduct Allegations
In a post to their website Saturday, The Homer Schools superintendent says that the district learned last week of allegations against a female teacher, and quickly put her on administrative leave; less than 24 hours later, the teacher resigned from her position.
Memorial Run To Be Held For Theresa Lockhart
A special memorial run is set to be held next week to honor a Portage woman killed by her husband. The Kalamazoo Area Runners announced that the run will take place Wednesday to remember Theresa Lockhart, who was an active member of the running nonprofit.
Battle Creek’s Heritage Tower Remodeling Continues
Last week, work to replace roofing on the 20-story building began, work made possible thanks to an almost half-million dollar loan from the Battle Creek Community Foundation. This reroofing project is expected to take around six weeks, and constitutes a major step in the $34 million redevelopment.
Over Three Dozen Remains Found Unclaimed In Athens Funeral Home
Back in March 2016, the Spencer Funeral Home building in Athens was bought at auction by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation. According to a statement, in October of this year, the former owner of Spencer’s died, and their family came to Lighthouse of Union City with several boxes “that contained the cremated remains of those that had not been claimed by family members prior to the sale of the building.”
Jackson County Man Arrested After Multi-County Manhunt
The 26-year-old had been wanted in Jackson County, and was believed to have been in Kalamazoo County’s Comstock Township Tuesday afternoon. He was first tracked down to the 5000 block of Savannah Ave, but evaded capture and allegedly broke into three homes in that area, stealing various items, before stealing a car and speeding off.
MDOT Southwest Talks Winter Prep
MDOT says that this year, 71 of their 83 trucks in the region will have green and amber beacons on them; these new green beacons have been rolled out over the last few years, and are shown to be easier to see in the winter.
Kalamazoo Home Catches Fire In Fireworks Explosion
The blaze started at 7am Sunday at the home in the 800 block of Lake St, where fireworks began exploding on the front porch. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says that they had to take a defensive strategy and that they couldn’t enter the residence due to the flames

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says that around 2pm Saturday, a woman had been jogging along E. MN Ave. near S 31st St. in Comstock, when a vehicle parked on the side of the road a little ahead of her; as she approached, a male suspect got out and began chasing after her.
